Pharmacology

Pharmacology forms an essential component of medical sciences and it contributes to all the specialties and super specialties. The good work of his predecessors is being taken forward by specialists who take care of it. Several new facilities have been added since. Drug Information Centre was started in 2009. The department has been recognized as the first ADR monitoring Centre in Punjab under Pharmacovigilance Programmed of India (PvPI) since 2011. MCI has permitted increase in MD seats from 2 to 54 per year.


Recent advances in teaching:-


1. Integrated therapeutics into UG teaching


  • Simulated Intravenous (IV) infusion
  • Computer Assisted Learning (CAL) to minimize animal sacrifice
  • Students submit “Therapeutic follow up case report” graded by a viva-voce
  • Clinical case discussion in collaboration with respective clinical departments
  • Pre-printed practical notebook coering the theory and practical aspects

2. Methodical PG Training Programme


  • Training in four pillars of Pharmacology viz. Experimental, Chemical, Clinical and Ethnopharmacology (ECCE).
  • Writing proposals and conduct various phases of clinical trials
  • At least one research project in addition to the thesis project
  • 100% placement at highly reputed academic institutions, corporate hospitals and pharmaceutical industries

3. Assets


  • Well equipped UG Laboratories
  • Well stocked museum with 250 indigenous drugs and over 1000 pharmaceutical specimens. Case scenarios with photographs depicting adverse drug reactions.
  • The first Animal House to be registered with CPCSEA in the region
  • Fully equipped Research Laboratory
  • Training of residents in chemical estimation, gel electrophoresis, plant extract assay etc.
  • Clinical Pharmacology Laboratory equipped with computerized TMT, spirometer, psychomotor function, test etc

4. Clinical Services


  • First Drug Information Centre(DIC)in the region started in 2009
  • Monthly Drug Update: regarding recently approved drugs and newer indications, advance drug reaction, warnings or withdrawals of medicines and a brief review about a group of drugs since August 2009
  • A two bedded Clinical Pharmacology Unit with multi-parameter recorders
  • ADR monitoring Centre, working under Pharmacovigilance Programmed of India(PvPI).It collects data on adverse events from wards and ICUs
  • Drug estimation services for antiepileptic using HPLC.
  • Support for conduct of phase II trails
  • Drug utilization studies and Prescription Audit conducted periodically
  • Drug formulary for the entire hospital has been prepared

5. The faculty also participates in


  • Ethical considerations of research proposals(humans and animals)
  • Drugs and Therapeutic Committee
  • Hospital Infection Control Committee
  • Organization and resource faculty for in-house workshops
  • The department has been organizing workshops in Clinical Research Methodology, integrating Clinical Pharmacology in UG curriculum at National and Zonal levels
  • More than a dozen CMEs have been organized under the aegis of ‘Association of Physiologists and Pharmacologists of India” since 2000
  • Workshops to train the PGs in Thesis plan writing, Statistics, Thesis writing, use of computers in medical research and Pharmacovigilance are regularly conducted.
