COMMUNITY MEDICINE


The field concerned with the study of health and disease in the population or a defined community or a group. Its goal is to identify the health problems and needs of defined populations (community diagnosis) and to plan, implement and evaluate the extent to which health measures effectively meet these needs. It also aims to understand the complex interplay of environmental, social, cultural, economic factors on the health and disease situation in the community.


Department of Community Medicine has one Rural Health Training Centre and one Urban Health Training Centre for providing comprehensive healthcare to the community as well as teaching and training the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Medical & Nursing students.


Department actively participates in research in collaboration with various specialties in field practice areas of the health centre. Department is actively involved in implementing National Health Programmes and commemoration of important health days.


RURAL HEALTH TRAINING CENTRE, POHIR


Department of Community Medicine operates a Rural Health Training centre at village Pohir, Block Dehlon, which was established in August, 1988. Over the years, the centre has maintained the pace of progress along with the institution and has adopted 15 villages catering to a population of 31,160. The department provides a comprehensive home based family health services to 6371 families through a efficient team of 24 supervisors / health workers / village health guides. The centre has a unique system of maintaining complete health records of the entire population in the form of family folders offering a wealth of health data of the entire cohort. OPD, IPD and emergency services are provided to the patients at subsidized rate with provision of free medicines.


URBAN HEALTH TRAINING CENTRE, SHIMLAPURI


Department of Community Medicine operates an Urban Health Training centre at Shimlapuri, Ludhiana .The centre was established in 1996 Kirti Nagar, Ludhiana was shifted to the present location in 2012. Presently the centre has adopted a population of 11,147 in the surrounding area and it provides a comprehensive home based family health services to 2384 families through a efficient team of 4 supervisors / health workers. The centre also has a unique system of maintaining complete health records of the entire population in the form of family folders offering a wealth of health data. Daily general OPD as well as specialist OPD are conducted at subsidized rate with provision of free medicines.
